Car Review Audi A3 Sportback - The third generation Audi A3 Sportback does not look different from the old model. But this model offers more space, fuel economy better, lower emissions and more equipment. It commands a premium slightly above the Audi A3 hatchback three-door version, but the larger loadspace that can tip the balance to the buyer requires extensive hatchback.

The German automaker may have increased the wheelbase by 58mm, but traces of the car is largely the same as the previous model. A3 Sportback offers ample rear seat space and easy access to three adults with a few millimeters more than the head and foot-space over its predecessor.

This, however, has cut weight by 90kg compared to the previous model and that has helped to keep fuel consumption and emissions of CO2 emissions down.

Engine line-up

Audi will initially offer the new A3 Sportback with a choice of one diesel and two petrol engines. Fuel consumption has been reduced an average of about 10% compared with the previous model.

Newly developed 2.0 TDI is available in two versions. The first to arrive will be a 148bhp version of the familiar three-door model, which produces 320Nm of appeal. The front-wheel drive A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI can get from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and go on to a top speed of 133mph. Combined fuel economy for this version is 67.3mpg and CO2 emissions 108G / km.

Buyers are looking for the ultimate in fuel economy than conventional models have to look at the diesel-powered 1.6-liter. It is claimed to return 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions are 99g / km.

But in 2015 the range will be added to the e-tron models, combines a 1.4-liter gasoline engine and electric motor to offer up to 176mpg and just 37g / km of CO2 output - perfect for company car users.

Most of the engines in the new Audi A3 Sportback is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, with the exception of the 1.8 TFSI in the UK will initially be equipped exclusively with the S tronic transmission. S tronic will be available as an option for all other engines.
