This is an all-new Subaru Outback. Now in its fifth generation, it really came of age and is a proposition that is really strong in the growth sectors of the UK car market.
Built for those who want the flexibility and reliability of the off-roader, along with the space and comfort of a large estate car, it is styled looks rough, and Subaru claims the general idea for the new model was "more Outback".
And what, the car is capable of this practical. Subaru's flagship vehicle, sales in the hundreds of thousands throughout the world, and it's one that perfectly reflects the core values of the brand. It is very capable on the road, almost haughty off, has acres of space inside and the quality of the cabin has been moved up a notch as well.
Strong rivals
It is more an indication of the strength of its competitors, which include Volvo XC70 honored and Volkswagen Passat Alltrack well, which will be revised only after the introduction of the all-new Passat impressive.
Vauxhall Insignia Tourer State may be worth mentioning here as well, although none of the above can hold a candle to the Subaru when the going gets tough. The Skoda Octavia Scout - while cheaper, smaller and slightly less capable off-road - perhaps the closest to the Outback basically, only in the case of rough, utilitarian character.
Classical Subaru drivetrain
Subaru has stuck to his guns with the engine and gearbox options too, plumping for a four-cylinder engine 'Boxer' - both petrol and diesel - and a choice of manual or automatic CVT for diesel models. The 2.5-liter turbocharged petrol is available with the automatic only.
Of course, all of the engine and the gearbox is connected to the all-wheel drive system that puts the most effort other companies to shame.
We have driven petrol and diesel automatic models, and can report them both very capable machine. In fact, we have driven on road, off road, in the snow, on the highway and traffic. In all situations with calm inland just take her.

Substantial improvement in
As mentioned earlier, the Japanese manufacturer has provided Outback interior is a great appointment in quality. This is a common problem with the car from Japan - the dash material they often find on the cheap side and while there forever, in this kind of price point customers expect a touch more finesse. We are pleased to report a big improvement here. It has a way to go to meet the standards of Audi quality materials and sheer style, for example, but Subaru's latest effort is admirable, and furthermore it is clearly evident cabin will stand up to the abuse of extraordinary. It is also packed with standard kit - including some very impressive security systems - and although durable, many plastics are pleasingly soft to the touch.
Great seats too, feel good-supported and support yet comfortable enough for long distance highway slogs.
Overall, we were very impressed with how the Outback has grown. It is a worthy vessel for the brand, and although it would not sell in large numbers in the UK (predictions for far less than 1,000 units of the launch in April until the end of 2015) is an internationally important car for Subaru.
